Most trading journal advice assumes you have 30 minutes after every session for detailed review. In reality, you have 5 minutes, you’re mentally drained, and the last thing you want to do is more analysis.

This checklist is designed for how traders actually work. Three quick checks before you trade, one glance during the session, and a 5-minute structured review after. Total time: under 10 minutes. Impact: measurable within weeks.

Pre-Session Checklist (2 Minutes)

Do this before you open your first position of the day.

✅ Check Your Rules

Pull up your active trading rules. Read them out loud. Yes, actually out loud.

  • What’s my daily trade limit? ___
  • What’s my max daily loss before I stop? ___
  • What hours am I allowed to trade? ___
  • Any symbols I’m avoiding this week? ___

This takes 30 seconds and dramatically reduces rule violations. The reason is simple: you can’t break a rule you just consciously recalled.

✅ Check Yesterday’s Score

Glance at your previous session’s results:

  • Did I follow my rules? (Yes/No)
  • What was my biggest leak? (name it)
  • Am I carrying emotional residue? (honest answer)

If yesterday was a bad day and you’re still feeling it, acknowledge that. Traders who pretend they’re starting fresh when they’re actually carrying frustration are the ones who revenge trade at 9:01 AM.

✅ Set Your Session Intent

Write one sentence: “Today I will focus on ___.”

Not a P&L target. A behavior target:
- “Today I will wait for A-grade setups only”
- “Today I will respect my 15-trade cap”
- “Today I will stop at my loss limit without exceptions”

One focus per day. That’s it.

Mid-Session Check (30 Seconds)

Set a timer for the midpoint of your trading session. When it goes off, answer one question:

Am I still following my pre-session intent?

If yes, keep going. If no, take a 5-minute break. Walk away from the screen. Come back and decide whether to continue or stop early.

This single intervention catches most session drift. The traders who blow up their daily P&L almost always do it in the second half of their session, after discipline has eroded without them noticing.

Post-Session Review (5 Minutes)

This is the most important part. Do it immediately after your last trade — not later, not tomorrow.

✅ Session Summary (1 minute)

Record these numbers (your journal should auto-calculate most of them):

Metric Today
Trades taken ___
Win rate ___%
Net P&L $___
Largest win $___
Largest loss $___
Sessions hours ___

✅ Rule Compliance (1 minute)

For each of your active rules, mark: ✅ followed or ❌ broken.

Rule Status Note
Trade limit (15/day) ✅/❌
Session hours (08-16) ✅/❌
Loss limit ($500) ✅/❌
Size limit (no increase after loss) ✅/❌

If you broke a rule, write a one-sentence note about when and why. Not an essay — just enough to remember.

✅ Best and Worst (1 minute)

Identify:
- Best trade: Which trade was your best execution today? (not highest P&L — best process)
- Worst trade: Which trade was your worst decision? Why?
- One lesson: What’s one thing you’ll do differently tomorrow?

✅ Emotional State (1 minute)

Rate your emotional state on a simple scale:

  • 😤 Frustrated / tilted
  • 😐 Neutral / flat
  • 🎯 Focused / sharp
  • 🏆 Confident (but check: is this real confidence or post-win overconfidence?)

This creates an emotional timeline over weeks. You’ll start noticing correlations between emotional states and trading outcomes.

✅ Tomorrow’s Prep (1 minute)

Write one sentence about tomorrow:
- Any rule adjustments needed?
- Any carry-over emotions to watch for?
- Same plan or something different?

Weekly Review (15 Minutes, Once Per Week)

The daily checklist feeds into a weekly review. Pick one day (Sunday evening or Monday morning works well).

Weekly Numbers

  • Total trades this week: ___
  • Total net P&L: $___
  • Average daily P&L: $___
  • Best day: $___
  • Worst day: $___
  • Rule compliance rate: ___%

Weekly Patterns

Look at your 5 daily reviews and answer:
1. Which rule did I break most often? → Focus on this rule next week
2. What was my most repeated mistake? → Set a specific countermeasure
3. Which day was my best execution? → What made that day different?
4. Am I improving from last week? → Compare the numbers

Weekly Adjustment

Based on the review, make ONE change for next week. Not five changes. One.

  • “I’ll reduce my trade cap from 20 to 15”
  • “I’ll add a rule: no trading the first 15 minutes”
  • “I’ll track my emotional state more carefully on Mondays”

One change per week, measured the following week. This is how consistent improvement actually works.

Common Mistakes with Daily Reviews

Mistake 1: Making it too detailed. If your review takes more than 5 minutes, you’ll stop doing it. Brevity > completeness.

Mistake 2: Focusing only on P&L. A losing day with perfect rule compliance is better than a winning day with blown rules. Process metrics matter more than outcome metrics.

Mistake 3: Skipping the review after bad days. Bad days are when the review matters most. That’s when the most useful data is generated. Force yourself to do the 5-minute review especially on the days you don’t want to.

Mistake 4: Not comparing across weeks. Daily reviews are useful. Weekly comparisons are transformative. The week-over-week trend is where improvement becomes visible.

Mistake 5: Trying to fix everything at once. One rule, one focus, one change per week. Stacking multiple changes makes it impossible to know what worked.

Automating the Review

Manual checklists work, but they rely on your discipline — which, as we’ve discussed, is a depleting resource.

The better approach: auto-import your trades into behavioral analytics software that handles the calculation automatically. Then your 5-minute review becomes:
1. Open your dashboard
2. Check today’s verdict (patterns detected, costs calculated)
3. Check rule compliance (auto-tracked)
4. Add one note if needed
5. Done

TraderDynamiq does this automatically for Binance, Bybit and TradingView. Import once, review daily, improve weekly.
